The two Communist nations Russia and China formed an indomitable alliance that scared the USA and Western block. A rift between Russia and China appeared during the 1960s, which forced China to join hands with US lead alliance. The conflict between Russia and China started during the 1930s when Russia supported Chiang Kai-Shek who formed the Republic of China (Taiwan), rather than Mao Se-Tong, who was accredited to form the Peoples Republic of China. Later relations between the two neighbours improved and Russia agreed to protect China against Western aggression. During the 1950s, a rift was developed between Russia and China over the future of Communism. Chinese Communist party under the stewardship of Mao Tse-Tong wanted to follow a more aggressive policy to spread Communism in the Western world. On the other hand, USSR wanted to reduce the conflict with the USA. China desired to follow a more aggressive policy to counter Western propaganda against Communism. China stated that Russia's "counter-revolutionary" policy would create the biggest block against the spread of Communism. The USSR countered the Chinese scathing attack mentioned that Russia too wants to spread Communism but confrontation with the Western world which beliefs in Capitalism will spread disaster in this nuclear era. USSR believes in the co-existence of Capitalism and Communism.
The clashes between two communist nations turned into a full-fledged war during 1969. The conflict broke out between USSR and China over the control of a small portion of land on the shore of the Ussuri river. The PLA attacked Soviet KGB Border troops and forced the latter to retreat. More Soviet troops reach the battle zone changed the fortune of war in favour of the USSR. The conflict took shape of a full-fledged war and both sides suffered casualties. Russian almost deployed nuclear warheads on the Sino-USSR border. The declassified CIA documents revealed that USSR was on the verge of nuked China. China suffered a huge setback and Mao Je-Dong conceded defeat at the hand of Russia. China accepted Russian's suzerainty over the region. The border skirmishes came to an end in September 1969 when Russian premier Kosygin met Chin premier Chou En-Lai in Bejing and both countries agreed for de-escalation of border tension. Chou En-Lai understands that China is no match against USSR. The border conflict forced China to tilt towards the USA for safety.
Russian Occupation of Vladivostok
Vladivostok was once part of China under the Qing dynasty, known as Haishenwai. The area was occupied by Russia after China was defeated by Britain, France in the 1860 Opium war. China stated that Ladakh is an inalienable part of Tibet and India should give up claim over Ladakh. Globaltimes the mouthpiece of Chinese government mentioned that abrogation of article 370 and division of Jammu & Kashmir into two union territory is illegal and create disturb the peace of the area.
The election in Jammu & Kashmir post abrogation of article 370 has immense importance. The election saw significant voter turnout, marks the end of the separatist movement. The election was closely monitored by international media. The District Development Council election saw voter turnout to about 66%, which is unique in many senses. There are twenty districts in Jammu & Kashmir, each with 14 members. The DDC election usher a new era for Kashmiri Pandits, Bakarwals, Gujjars, Shias, Pakistani refugees and Dalits. They used their franchise to elect their representative in DDC. We need to appreciate the contribution of national security advisor Ajit Doval for the conduct of free and fair DDC election in Jammu & Kashmir.
For the last three decades, we have observed a lot of bloodshed which cast aspersion on Jammu & Kashmir. Dealt a major blow to the tourism industry, which is the prime livelihood of Kashmiris. Bengal legion DR. Shyama Prasad Mukherjee martyred for the cause of abrogation of separate rules for Kashmir. The abrogation of article 370 and the ensuing election was a tribute to the great samaritan DR. Mukhjerjee; one step towards providing justice to exiled Kashmiri pandits. BJP set a foothold in Kashmir by winning the Srinagar election, which was considered a daydream a couple of weeks ago.
PDP, National Conference wanted to re-install article 370, received a major jolt, as they faced defeat in most of the seats in South Kashmir, famous for terrorist activities. An election is the core part of democracy. Vibrant democracy will usher in a new era of development for Jammu & Kashmir, clipping the wings of separatist outfits. Jammu & Kashmir is famous for the serene beauty, valour of Dogra, Amarnath shrine, Mata Vaishno Devi temple, tourism and the apple industry. Thousands of years old Kashmiri culture has unique features, which was overshadowed by Decades-long terrorist activities.
The most significant outcome of the ensuing election is the emergence of BJP as the single largest political party and the victory of several independent candidates who do not share the views of the Jupkar alliance. We need to celebrate the victory of Indian democracy over separatist ideology. Now marginalised Kashmiri Pandits, Dalits, Dogra, Bakkarwals, Gujjars, Shias will play a prime role in the political decision making of Kashmir. The new regime should build a close-knit team, which represents the alienated parts of society.
